Chris Cantell Discusses Odd News: Lebedova romansa
by Zivka Deleva
Sprotivnoto e vistina. Lebedot Petra, e normalen crn lebed koj ivee vo Germanskata zoo. Sfativte? Slatkata romansa zapona vo 2006 godina i Petra stana mala dzvezda vo zoolokata gradina. Oficijalnite pretstavnici, verojatno dopreni i isto taka pod ubavo vlijanie od vakvata vrska reija da im dozvolat da iveat zaedno preku zimata. No se slui neto to verojatno nikoga ne go oekuvavme i tie se razdelija. Ok, vsunost ne bee ba taka, no Petra si najde nov drugar. Ovoj pat toa ne e brod, no normalen bel lebed so dve noze i krilja, bez mehanizam za pedelinka i sekako so vistinski perduvi! Direktorot na zoolokata gradina Joerg Adler potvrdi deka dvete ptici gradat gnezdo zaedno. A to so siromaviot brod lebed? Ke bide vraten na lokalniot sopstvenik utre. Ovaa prikazna me vodi kon ute edna sporedba deka lugeto i ivotnite se mnogu slini. Lugeto se slepi i naivni, isto kako Petra, i im treba nekoe vreme da go sfatat toa. No toa e ivotot ili ne?

Chris Cantell Discusses Odd News: Strajk v Taliansku paralyzuje krajinu
by Romana Schlesingerova
Vodici a obsluha autousiv, elektriciek a mera zastavia pracu v jednotlivych talianskych mestach v roznych casoch. Jeden z prikladov cistej geniality sedi prave v ich parlamente. Konzervativny politik GustavoSelva, ktory pouzil vozidlo ambulancie pre nudzovy odvoz priamo do budovy televizie, kde mal mat v tom case interview.

by Daniela Simkova
Opat mozu zit v harmonii.

Chris Cantell Discusses Odd News: The Pants Judge strikes again
by Corina Ciubotaru
America is a fine country where anybody can sue someone else over just about everything. For instance, a judge from Washington found it important to file a lawsuit against a dry cleaning company which, he claims, lost his pants. The more surprising aspect is that he has filed the appeal for $54 million and he intends to prove he means business. He took his trousers for an alteration and demanded $1,150 at first, when the people at the store said they couldn't find them. A few days later, the pants were located but Judge Pearson claimed those weren't his pants, and so the nightmare began for the owners of Custom Cleaners, the Chung family. Their legal fees were paid for by the sympathetic public, and this just goes to show that even regular people, though accustomed to bizarre lawsuits, admit this is a bit out of line. Judge Pearson requested money for every day the sign saying "satisfaction guaranteed" has hung above the cleaners' entrance, claiming the sign was a lie, and when the judge hearing the case dismissed it, there was no other choice but to file an appeal. The Chung family tried to end the whole thing by asking Mr. Pearson nicely to give it up, not demanding that he pay for their legal fees as well; the judge refused. Now, his job is also in danger. His term ended this year and a commission will decide next month if they grant him a full 10-year term. This is unlikely, as they have already sent Mr. Pearson a letter informing him that he might not be reappointed.

Number one
by Lenka Lehenova
If you are excellent at school, you are number one. If you win some races, you are the first and number one. So if you are the best, you are just "the number one". Everybody wants to be number one. We would be happy if others called us "number one" or "hey, the best" or just "the one". It is really nice image but it is only dream. I don't think that people's envy would allow it but if you really want to be "number one" and you aren't brilliant sportsman or scientist you can just put this number on a place where everybody can see it. Where? You have a lot of possibilities. For example you can draw number one on your house or put it on your close. Yes, I know that everybody can do this and it isn't special!Do you want to be unique? O.k., no problem! Everything what you need is only 14 million dollars. Then you can buy automobile license plate with nothing only with the number "1". Do you think that it is very expensive and nobody would buy it? So you are wrong because somebody just bought it in United Arab Emirates. His name is Saeed Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family and he bought it for a record price at a charity auction on Saturday. The reason why he bought it is that it is the best number and he wants to be the best in the world. There are no Arabic numerals and no letters, just only "1". Now he can drive by his car and all people will know him because of his "1". There is very popular to write on your license plate what you want for example some name or numbers. It is quite expensive but the record sale 14 million dollars surpassed also the 6.8 million dollars that was paid for an Emirati license plate at an auction with the number 5 on it. If you want to own a car with special number today you can. You just need money. Saeed Khouri is number one now not only because of "1" but also because he helped the people who need it. Proceeds from auction go to rehabilitation center for victims of traffic accidents.

Unwanted hats and shirts
by Claudia Sonea
It has been a while since the American football team, New England Patriots (commonly called the "Pats" by sports writers and fans) has lost the latest Super Bowl disappointing millions of fans. They became in 2007 the fourth team in NFL history to complete a perfect regular season before being defeated by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. There is a saying "one man's loss, other man's gain" and it has never been more real than now when all the shirts and caps proclaiming the victory of the New England Patriots have ended up in the hands of poor Nicaraguan children who were more than grateful. For them it was the nicest present ever and like Miriam Diaz, of World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization, said it they are the winners. Luckily for them hundreds of shirts and caps, which had been manufactured in advance to celebrate the Patriots' expected victory over the New York Giants (and other garments are produced in advance so players and fans can put them on to celebrate immediately after the final whistle of the game) were given to the children in the southern city of Diriamba. World Vision has a strong bond with National Football League, or NFL, and every year helps out poor children in Latin America and Africa with the unwanted "winners" shirts of the team that actually loses the Super Bowl. It doesn't sound pretty good for them, but they are enjoying even the smallest thing. Somehow the bitter taste of such actions doesn't encourage me to cheer their action, but it is better than nothing. Wouldn't you say so?

The Navajo beauty
by Zuzana Blazeckova
Many people don't know much or anything at all about Navajo culture today. This folk live on the nation's largest Indian reservation, where the life continues differently. Traditions here are still keeping alive and many special attitudes of their nation still reign too. The very extraordinary view is the respect and honor Navajo man show to Navajo women. The role of woman here is placed on a special level as much as the beauty of them is considered alternatively than we are usually used to. Kind of proof is really remarkable weeklong so called Miss Navajo Nation pageant which is not only about the beauty. The pageant began in 1952 and the winner became a woman who got the most applause from the audience. The time has changed but the main point and strict contest requirements of the competition stayed. The Miss Navajo Nation Miss can join now any Navajo women who contest requirements such as to be single, to have a high school diploma, no children and be aged 18 to 25. One of the most important demands is to know and be able to speak in traditional language of Navajo culture. This is also one of disciplines joined women have to fulfill. However it sounds easily, because their job is to explain directions to their house in traditional language, this is the most difficult part almost for all competitors. Other challenging skill they have to prove is sheep-butchering with butcher-knives. But on the other side they are naturally exposing also their charm in evening gowns and high heels and jewelry. The Navajo women beauty has different criteria like the casual one. It is more about internal beauty, which might not be wonderful to others, the harmony they are striving for.

Squirrels attack
by Claudia Sonea
Funny as it may sound for 117 customers of Xcel Energy were left in total darkness after they power was knocked out. The suicidal squirrels not only that they created a black out, but also they perished in the unfortunate incident that took place on Monday. Brian Elwood, a spokesman for Xcel Energy, stated that measures have to be taken in order to prevent such incidents from happening again. The first city affected by the squirrel's contact with an overhead transformer was Wisconsin and the 117 customers dealt with the consequences. In less than an hour the power was restored by repair crews. Unfortunately for the little animal it did not survived, only its remains were found afterwards. 40 miles away from the first power outage, Ironwood, Michigan, on Monday morning a second squirrel get into another substation, causing an outage that affected more than 1,400 customers in Ironwood and two nearby communities, according to Elwood. One of the persons that suffered deeply due to the power blackout was Rodney Johnson who was stuck on an elevator at the city's Enterprise Center. The firefighters struggled for a couple of minutes to open the door and during that time Johnson prayed to make it to Thanksgiving, because of his past record of claustrophobia. When they finally succeeded to get him out, he almost knocked out a firefighter just to get out of there. Elwood says they can't help it; the curious animals cannot be kept away from lines although they are one of the leading causes of outages, trailing only severe weather. They learnt just like the people with bird feeders who try to keep the squirrels out, that in fact squirrels always find a way to get back in. Stay connected and follow the line of the events, you might get to the bottom of a solution.

Still no Christmas card in the mail box? Don't worry, there is a chance that your friends and relatives haven't forgotten about you, but the mailman just misplaced it. Pray to God that you will get it before you'll be dead and buried. Ethel Martin of Oberlin, may God rest her soul, was less fortunate and the Christmas c ard that she should have received it back in 1914 from her cousins in Alma, Nebraska. The postcard featuring a color drawing of Santa Claus and a young girl was dated December 23, 1914, and was kept for the last century by unknown person, says Oberlin Postmaster Steve Schultz. He also added that despite the fact that Ethel is deceased, the office thought to send the card to a relative and that is how they found Bernice Martin, Ethel's sister-in-law who was seriously curios about the place where it was kept all this time and why it has such a good shape. She believed that somewhere in Illinois it was found the card and was interested how it got there. The one-cent postage of the early 20th century wouldn't have covered the value of the Christmas card placed inside another envelope with modern postage for the trip to Oberlin. Poor Ethel, I bet she was disappointed by fact that her cousins forgot about her, if she only knew!Anyway, take care to all your Christmas cards or it may get to the other end of the world. Definitely, there are cards on the way for you as well, so keep your fingers crossed for the mailman to not misplace it.

Family wishes Merry Christmas to thief who stole their lights Zuzana Hanzelova
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. - An Long Island family was robbed, and someone stole their Christmas lights from their house, they left a note for the thief, in stead of filling a report about the theft. And what a note it was! A sign, wishing the thief a "Merry Christmas" saying: "You stole our lights but not our spirit. Merry Christmas." According to Susan Brown and Peter Fitzgerald, the blue lights were taken sometime over the weekend, from an evergreen tree outside their home. This theft disrupted a family tradition begun as a symbol of hope after the premature birth fo Brown's grandson, Tyler Gulluscio, in 2003."I don't know who took the lights," said 4-year, today a healthy boy in telephone interview. "Maybe it was a squirrel or a porcupine or a bad guy." "He doesn't quite understand why someone would takesomething from somebody else and not to give it back," said Tyler's dad. "Even if we never know who took them, if they just put the lights back, that would be great!"Fitzgerald says his family really hopes to see the blue lights back on the evergreen come Christmas Eve, when the family will gather at Brown's home for dinner. Until then, they have strung multicolored lights on the tree.

But wabbadabba also wants to help people, who are in a financial crisis. "We also feel strongly about giving to those less fortunate hence the twelfth day has a slightly more serious message, with twelve lucky wabbadabba users not only winning Amazon vouchers but having two drinking wells made safe for families in Sierra Leone in their name," said Ben Akin-Smith.Even though this winning is simple and doesn't want to do any wrong to people, there is still about 15 percent of winners who didn't picked their prizes up in some worry of various catches. People are just afraid to do something they are not convinced that it wouldn't harm them. Ben Akin-Smith stated: "It's taken people a while to realize there are no catches and it really is as simple as searching and winning, but people are really getting the hang of it now. Prizes are flying off the shelves as more and more people use wabbadabba to inject a bit more fun in to what can be a mundane everyday task."

Everybody loves squirrels.
by Zuzana Valkova
Do you remember that little animated squirrel from movie Ice Age. How cute it was. Just jumping everywhere around, looking for the nuts and for the right place for it. And that winking. Was not that neat? But in case you do not know, the real squirrels are the same. Only difference is that squirrels are trying to be close to us. They are able to find the right place for their nests anywhere. The best place is your house. Everywhere where is some food, there is a good place. So be careful when you will be opening your refrigerator next time. Do not be surprised when you find small squirrel nest inside of your car. There is no food, but it is warm in there. Places like parks or woods are not enough cool for modern squirrels, they want luxury. Only problem is that they can be dangerous. They can bite, scratch and jump like crazy. There are some of them who are not so clever, so they are looking for the oddest places you can imagine, like engines, transformers, or in electricity. Of course some of them are killed sometimes, but it is not significant for other squirrels. They are trying to do the same again and again. Nobody knows why they pick up these places. Maybe there is some smell or sign, which they think is something different. I just do not believe that they are so stupid. They can not be.

Strikes in Italy paralyzing country
by Romana Schlesingerova
The employees of Italian railroads started a series of strikes this morning, which will include also employees of airlines, bus and port transportation. According to the agency DPA, the number of strikers can reach 300 000.Railroads began their eight hours break from work at 9 a.m. Hundreds of flights are going to be canceled in Rome and Milan, because of the strike, started at 11 a.m. Bus, tram and metro drivers will stop their duties in several Italian towns in various times. This strike is organized by the Main Italian Trade-Union as a protest against the reduction of finances in the field of public transportation for the next year. They are also connected to the main economy crisis in the country controlled airline company Alitalia and the railroad organization Trenitalia. It looks like the Italians will have to use their feet to get anywhere, or to figure out something more sophisticated. One example of pure geniality sits in their government. The conservative politician Gustavo Selva, who used an ambulance for an emergency ride to television, where he had been interviewed. He walked into the studio and announced: "I used an old journalistic trick to get here on time!"The emergency doesn't think about his act as a joke. At the same day, the U.S. President George W. Bush visited the country and they answered more than 600 calls, sending out 50 ambulances to help people hurt in protests over Bush's administration. And of course, it was still day as another- people didn't stop being sick or die. There was for sure someone else who would use the ambulance for more than an "old journalistic trick."

A new theft- tool Claudia Sonea
I have lived enough to see this happening: the world gone mad? I heard about silly things and silly people doing a lousy job hiding their tracks or stuff like that, but it is for the first time that someone just got away stealing a Porsche using nothing else but a flower pot. The story took place in Germany on Tuesday when a 56-years old man was backing out of his garage in his grey Porsche 997 Turbo. Until now nothing strange, not even the fact that he heard a scraping noise and got out to investigate and found a flower pot jamming one of the car's tires. The comedy starts when he bends down to remove the flower pot and a thief pushes him aside and gets in the car driving off. The poor man could do nothing more than step aside so the thief doesn't run him over. Fortunately enough the flower pot remained as a guarantee that eventually the car will be returned. Meanwhile, the former owner of the Porsche can enjoy his new pot. We thank police in the western city of Bonn for giving the material for such a good laugh. Although we are deeply sorry for the owner of the car, we can only say cheers to the thief, he's a genius. It is a one time event to trade a flower pot for a Porsche 997 Turbo that costs around 150,000 euro ($221,000). He even launched a new trend, the flower pot as the best theft- tool ever!

Christmas forever Claudia Sonea
Everyone heard about holiday madness, but few would have thought that a single holiday could actually make someone fanatic. Cindy Johnson from Lyndon Township declares herself an ornament addicted and a Christmas junkie and not without reason. She has 42 Christmas trees and she deck the halls with all of them. The story starts back in 1975, when some of us have not seen the light of day yet, so it has quite a history. Because there wasn't any more room on her Christmas tree for ornaments, she decided to buy another one, than another one and she did not stopped until she made a collection of 42. Of course some of them were given by people that bought a new one and now she has a collection called by her the Charlie Brown trees. As a sentimental collector, Cindy remembers where she got every ornament and that means a lot due to the fact that she has owns 2,000 Hallmark ornaments and 500 "generic" ornaments. Still, she doesn't want to stop and she loves the hunt for new ornaments every single winter season starting with Dayspring Gifts in downtown Chelsea from where she intends to acquire this year 100 more. Each of the ranch rooms is decorated with the exception of one bathroom, while each tree has a theme, which could be Winnie-the-Pooh or romance or cartoon characters. Furthermore, each ornament is carefully wrapped in its own box. So many "each" makes you think that it must be a tiring process when the Christmas passes to start packing up. The pride of the collection is a 7.5 feet high tree sitting in the family room and the smallest tree has 6 inches, but he's been looked after and Cindy bought its own tiny ornaments. She sees them as her children and she talks about them exactly like others would speak about theirs, therefore she finds it difficult to say which she likes the most. It's a nice hobby and it's lovely. Because she is such a Christmas lover, we wish that Santa bring her the desired present: the rare 1982 Hallmark Frosty Friends ornament. Merry Christmas, ho, ho, ho!

The Yahoo search technique wabbadabba got into the Christmas mood. Wabbadabba decided to hand out prizes as a Christmas gifts. It basically let users to win prizes as they search. The prizes are various, we could mention the flat screen TV, Nintendo or £5 and £10 Amazon vouchers. Mr. Ben Akin-Smith, the head of innovation at wabbadabba, expressed his attitude towards the simple giving of presents for fun which is important during Christmas.

Teenagers and their "toys"
by Barbora Misakova
Police in Warsaw, Poland, couldn't believe their eyes. They had to arrest one 14-year-old teenager who tried to derail city trams in Lodz. The most serious on the whole situation was fact that this boy used homemade device which made all by himself! He tried to switch tram tracks from distance using infra-red and remote-control and caused that three times were these tracks really switched and once even the tram jumped the tracks. As polish officers found this device in suspect's home he will be probably indicted from others derailments in Lodz.Boy couldn't do anything else than to confess and take his responsibility for problems he caused to polish tram depots and now he is placed in a detention centre for juvenile delinquents. But he was the only teenager who tried similar dangerous things and caused problems. There are also other cases.Children are still more and more active, and in these days most of them is just bored by playing PC games or watching television. They want more action! And that's why many of them are just entertaining themselves by making various devices which in many cases hurt someone. It is also no problem to find instructs how to build up similar "inventions".There were many stories about how teenage boy made for example a bomb & just like one 16-year-old boy from Holland who just didn't want to go to school and that's why he threatened to let the school explode. Sometimes also happens that some child just calls to the school and says there is a bomb. Children are more and more shifty. That's why parents should be careful and should talk to their children not just to know them better but also to educate them and show them there are better ways how to play and entertain themselves!

Chris Cantell Discusses Odd News: Word of the year
by Claudia Sonea
Humanity is obsessed with words and why wouldn't it be? After all, we communicate through words, not only expressing opinions, but also revealing ourselves. Therefore there should be a contest that awards the favorite word of people. Well, now it is. The Macquarie dictionary, Australia's top dictionary, started a poll for readers to vote for their favourite new word in the latest annually updated online volume, offering a total of 85 words or phrases in 17 categories which are not specifically Australian, but reflect global trends in fields such as technology, health and the social scene. Some of the new words created as a result of expansion, intercommunication and worldwide technology development, are cyberathlete (a professional player of computer games), digital native (a person who grows up using digital media and communications systems, and thus has complete familiarity with them), globesity (the frightening phenomenon of fatness spread all over the world), which generated the words slummy mummy (mothers of young children who have abandoned all care for their personal appearance) or yummy mummy, tanorexia (an obsessive desire to have tanned skin, placing the sufferer at risk of skin cancer), manscaping (a grooming procedure in which hair is shaved or trimmed from a man's body, as from the back, legs, chest), etc. The fast pace of technology generated words like password fatigue that means a level of frustration reached by having too many different passwords to remember exposing the computer slave to data smog (electronic information as by emails, internet searches, etc., which, by its volume, impairs performance and increases stress). The voting takes place in the last weeks of January and at the beginning of February, the winner will be announced. Don't waste any more time, your word might be the lucky one. In any case you'll have a blast just reading the terms and their definitions. Recommended to those suffering of password fatigue as a way of relaxation. Enjoy!

An UFO viewed in Texas last week
by Ivana Bruderova
Every month about 200 sights of UFO are reported in America. The most of them in California, Colorado and Texas. Usually seen by one or only few people is marked as a concoction and soon being forgotten. The last UFO report from Stephenville,Texas differ with the fact, several dozens people claim they saw an flying object which looked like nothing they have ever seen before. They describe it as a large silent object, mile long, about half a mile wide with bright lights flying low and fast. The lights were changing configuration and some of them believe it was chased by fighter jets. In the same time mechanist Ricky Sorrell saw similar flying object in Dublin. He said he observed it several times. "It feels good to hear that other people saw something because it means I'm not crazy." continued Ricky.UFO was noticed during several weeks with several tens of people in several countries. They all describe it so alike. Very often the flying aircrafts are considered to be an UFO in the night, but the witnesses are sure the aircraft make much more noise as this object did . Mjr. Karl Lewis, spokesman of 301st Fighter Wing at the Joint Reserve Base Naval Air Station in Forth Worth said no aircraft from his base was in this area at the January 8 when most of people reported UFO. But in his opinion it could be two commercial aircrafts and the sun rays during the sun set caused the lights seemed unusually bright. This case is still investigated with organizations dealing with UFO and no official statement have been issued yet.

Blurred history of D. B. Cooper probably cracked
by Lenka Filipova
Cooper has become a legend of the Pacific Northwest as he hijacked the plane 36 years ago and jumped out with his para-brake. He tried to escape and thus all people living near by this region expect his body will be find once as an evidence of his audacious elopement. It all happened in November 1971 when someone, who identified himself as Dan Cooper, seized over a Northwest Orient flight. He claimed he had a bomb and consequently forced passengers to give him all their money. He received from them $200,000 and with his bag full of money leaped out of the plane somewhere near the Oregon line. It was estimated that he might have probably landed around Amboy. Exactly in this area the children were playing recently. They unearthed a piece of fabric of chute sticking out of the ground. According to FBI agent Larry Carr they immediately called for their father and urged him to call FBI.As this became publicly known, the legend of D. B. Cooper was reopened again. In Ariel, 20 miles away of Amboy, there is a store which used to have D. B. Copper party every year. Its owner Dona Eliot do not think it is him as her opinion is that he hid himself in the bush to wait for his companion, who should take him to the airport in Portland (60 miles south). She thinks that is the perfect place to nestle as nobody would snoop him there.FBI does not want to tell in forward whether it is the right kind of chute till the results if examinations are not confirmed.
