It even got its place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Jolokia chilli, often dubbed ghost chilli, comes from northeastern parts of India, it can be also found in Sri Lanka. The spicy heat of a chilli is measured at the Scoville Scale, which indicates the amount of a chemical compound capsaicin present. The scale is named after American chemist Wilbur Scoville who developed a test for rating the “hotness” of a chilli. Jolokia achieved SHU (Scoville Heat U! nit) rating of 1,001,304 as it was recorded at the Mexico State University in 2006. In comparison, Tabasco sauce has an SHU level of about 5,000. Due to its extreme characteristics the Naga Jolikia has several uses. Except for being used as a spice i tis added to homeopathic preparations for stomach ailments in India. Also in the northeastern regions of India, people use them to keep wild elephants away from their homes, either they are smeared on fences or made into smoke bombs. In 2009, India´s Defence Research and Development Organisation informed it would try to use the peppers in non-lethal hand grenates. "The chilli grenade is a non-toxic weapon and when used would force a terrorist to come out of his hideout,“ said lead scientist R.B. Srivastava from the Organisation.
